Boundary quiet
A brief reflection on the peace that often follows choosing ourselves with decisive integrity.
Behind this piece
About
This poem reflects on the unexpected stillness that can follow enforcing a boundary.
While setting boundaries is often difficult, and may be seen as conflict, this piece highlights its necessity by pointing to what comes afterward:
the quiet that arises when we stop negotiating against our own well-being.
Sometimes peace is not something we find.
It is something we create by upholding our boundaries.
Insight
This poem came from noticing something I hadn't expected.
I used to think boundaries were primarily about saying “no” to other people. Over time, I began to realize they were just as much about saying “yes” to my own peace.
One of the things that surprised me most was what happened afterward.
Not triumph.
Not vindication.
Just quiet.
The kind of quiet that arrives when an internal argument has finally ended. When you stop spending energy trying to convince yourself to tolerate something you already know isn't right for you.
The poem doesn't celebrate walking away.
It celebrates what becomes possible once you do.
Sometimes the deepest peace doesn't come from changing other people.
It comes from no longer abandoning ourselves.
