Free will

This poem reflects on the relationship between freedom, responsibility, and transformation.

It imagines life as continually presenting us with opportunities to choose differently, even when those choices require letting go of familiarity, certainty, or comfort.

At its heart, the poem suggests that while many things may influence us, only our choices can ultimately change the direction of our lives.

I wrote this poem during a period when I was thinking deeply about free will, destiny, and the relationship between the two.

I have often experienced life as though it were continually steering me toward growth. Delays, resistance, and unexpected challenges rarely feel random. They seem almost calculated, inviting me to let go of identities and ways of living that no longer fit while encouraging me towards something beyond my current understanding.

Whether that reflects something inherent about the universe or simply the way I make meaning of my experiences, I still find the perspective valuable.

The line that has stayed with me most is:

“The choice is always yours”

because I think it contains the heart of the poem.

Everything else—the barriers, the fears, the pressure, even the universe itself—functions as the environment within which that central idea is explored.

We are influenced constantly.

But influence is not the same thing as choice.

I think the poem is less interested in explaining how the universe works than in insisting that our lives change when our choices change.

Whatever forces may shape the landscape around us, no one else can choose to step into a different future on our behalf. The only way to have a different experience is to make a different choice.

Freedom begins there.
