Peaceful Now

A quiet reflection on peace as something we may not need to find, but rather create enough stillness to notice.

Peaceful Now
Peace arrives the moment you
Get still enough to see
It was always
Right here

About

This poem offers a simple possibility: perhaps peace is not somewhere else, waiting for our circumstances to finally become right.

Sometimes—perhaps always—it may already exist within the present moment, obscured by everything demanding our attention.

Stillness does not necessarily create peace.

Sometimes it simply allows us to notice that it was already here.

Like the silence under the noise.

Insight

I have spent a lot of time imagining peace as something I will, eventually, arrive at.

  • When this is resolved.
  • When that changes.
  • When I understand what happens next.
  • When the things creating uncertainty, pain, or urgency finally settle down.

Then I can be at peace.

But this poem came from recognizing another possibility:

“Peace arrives the moment you
Get still enough to see
It was always
Right here”

There is a small contradiction in the language that I like.

Peace arrives, only for us to discover that it was already here.

Perhaps what arrives is not peace itself, but our awareness of it.

That doesn't mean every circumstance is peaceful.

There are experiences that genuinely hurt. There are problems that need solving, dangers that require action, needs that remain unmet, and conditions we should actively work to change.

Stillness does not make those things disappear. But neither do they necessarily occupy the entirety of the present moment. When I become still enough, sometimes I can notice what exists alongside them:

My breath.

My body.

The place where I am sitting.

A moment in which nothing is being demanded of me except what is actually happening now.

The mind is often somewhere else entirely—replaying what happened, anticipating what might happen, trying to solve what has not happened yet.

And meanwhile, some quieter part of the present may remain untouched by all of that movement. So then, perhaps all I need to to do is quiet the noise within myself enough to notice.

I think that is the “right here” of the poem.

Not a denial of everything difficult that exists.

Not a command to be peaceful when I am not.

Just the possibility that peace does not always have to be earned by finally arranging life correctly.

Sometimes the search for peace can itself carry me away from the only place I could actually experience it:

Here.

Now.

And when I become still enough to notice that, peace can feel as though it has finally arrived.

Even though the more honest truth is probably that I am the one who finally returned.
